2009 Press Releases
April 26, 2009 - SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Jason Shultz, of Carlisle, drove to a convincing victory in Saturday night’s 25-lap 358 sprint car main event at Selinsgrove Speedway following an exciting wheel-to-wheel battle with Kevin Nouse, of Lewisberry.
For Shultz, the 2004 track champion who returned to the 358 sprint car division this season following a brief stint in 410 sprint car racing, his fourth career win at the track was worth $1,500 behind the wheel of the Martin’s Refrigeration No. 2.
Jeff Rine, of Danville, set a torrid pace in the late model feature, capturing his 49th career win at the track and setting a new 25-lap record in 9:04.129. The win was his third of the season at Selinsgrove.
Brian Towsey, of Port Royal, won his first career race at Selinsgrove in the 15-lap pro stock feature, while Ricky Bender, of Jolliett, scored his second roadrunner feature of the season in the division’s 12-lap main event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present a four division racing program of 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.
On the start of the sprint car feature, 16th-place starter Matt Horst’s race car got turned sideways on the frontstretch and flipped over several times after being struck by 19th-place starter Tommy Martocci. Both drivers walked away from the incident without injury.
Polesitter Tom Wise took the lead when the race restarted. Wise was chased by fourth-place starter Kevin Nouse for the first three laps. On a lap four restart, Nouse made a pass by Wise for the lead using the outside lane on the backstretch.
The race was stopped again on lap seven when 18th-place starter Davie Franek made contact with the third-turn wall and flipped over. Franek was not injured in the crash. When the race resumed, Nouse led sixth-place starter Jason Shultz, who was able to drive by Wise on the restart. Nouse and Shultz then raced several laps in a wheel-to-wheel battle for the lead. Wise, eighth-place starter Phil Walter and fifth-place starter Matt Heimbach raced for positions in the top five.
The caution flag regrouped the field on lap 14 when Chuck Paige’s race car stopped in turn two. Another lead change occurred on the restart, as Shultz made the winning pass by Nouse using the inside lane entering turn one.
While at the front of the field, Shultz began to stretch his lead, and posted a 2.7 second margin of victory over 13th-place starter Nate Snyder, who stormed into the runner up position with five laps remaining. Nouse, Walter, and M. Heimbach completed the top five.
Fourth-place starter Tony Adams powered into the lead at the start of the late model feature. Adams led second-place starter Brett Schadel for the first three laps until fifth-place starter Jeff Smith powered into the runner up position.
Jeff Rine, who started 10th, advanced into the top five by lap five. Rine then made it an intense three-car battle with Smith and ninth-place starter Coleby Frye for the runner up position. Entering turn one on the 12th circuit, Rine secured the second position, with Smith and Frye in pursuit.
Rine quickly began to reel in Adams for the lead position. On the 19th lap, Rine made the winning pass with an inside move by Adams coming off turn four. The final laps saw the defending champion streak away from the field and post an impressive 17-second margin of victory over Adams, Schadel, Frye, and Steve Campbell.
Lon Savage started on the pole and moved into the lead for the start of the pro stock feature. Savage was trailed by third-place starter AJ Stroup and second-place starter Chad Davis. Meanwhile, 10th-place starter Brian Towsey was horsepowering his way to the front the pack.
On the 10th circuit, Towsey closed in on Savage and made the winning pass on the low side off turn four. Savage, however, didn’t let Towsey out of his sites and remained in contention until the finish. At the checkered flag, Towsey was victorious by only half of a second over Savage, Stroup, Davis, and Scott Landis.
Second-place starter Scott Dunham Jr. led the first lap of the roadrunner feature until fifth-place starter Ricky Bender raced into the front spot. Seventh-place starter Cory Long advanced to second on the third circuit and began to show a lot of speed.
Through most of the race, the top five drivers raced bumper-to-bumper around the fast half-mile oval. With Bender in command, Long, third-place starter Kyle Miller, sixth-place starter Doug Minium, and ninth-place starter Bob Bussey jockeyed for positions.
At the checkered flag, Bender’s margin of the victory was only .66 of a second over Long. Minium finished third, followed by Bussey and Mike Kiehl. Miller’s car, which placed fourth, failed a post-race technical inspection.
April 19, 2009 - SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Scott Flammer, of West Milford, N.J., became the first repeat sprint car winner of the season in Saturday night’s 25-lap main event at Selinsgrove Speedway. Also a winner of the season opening event for sprint cars on March 28, Flammer notched his fourth career victory at the track behind the wheel of his self-owned No. 37.
Jeff Rine, of Danville, became the first repeat winner of the season in the late model division when he made a late-race pass by Tony Adams, of Sunbury, for his 48th career victory in the 25-lap main event.
Jason Smith, of Williamsport, pulled off the hat trick with his third straight win in the 15-lap pro stock feature, while Ricky Bender, of Jolliett, scored an exciting victory in the third annual Collier Paving & Construction Roadrunner 20. Marlin Dunham, of Selinsgrove, collected a $100 bonus from Byers Built Engines for setting fast time and a new track record in roadrunner qualifying with a lap time of 26.862.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present a four division show of 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 25, sponsored by Advanced Concrete Systems.
Second-place starter Jeff Furlong drove into the lead at the drop of the green flag in the sprint car feature. Fourth-place starter Cody Keller trailed Furlong for the first two laps of the race before eighth-place starter Davie Franek advanced to second. During a lap three caution flag, last week’s winner Phil Walter withdrew from the race with mechanical problems.
On the fourth lap, Franek took the lead with an outside pass by Furlong racing out of turn four. Furlong maintained the runner up position for several laps, while Keller, ninth-place starter Scott Flammer, and fifth-place starter Matt Horst competed in the top five.
On a lap 11 restart, Flammer drove by Franek for the lead and never looked back. The 11th lap also saw the night’s first red flag after Keller’s race car hit the outside turn one guardrail and flipped over several times. Keller, whose car was then struck by another on the track, was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with undisclosed injuries. During the second half of the race, 11th-place starter Blane Heimbach began to show speed and pulled into the top five. Flammer’s sprinter was clearly fastest of the show as he posted a 4.2 second margin of victory over Franek, Heimbach, TJ Stutts, and Nate Snyder.
Cody Keller, of Selinsgrove, was transported to the Geisinger Medical Center Level I Trauma Center in Danville with undisclosed injuries following a serious crash in turn one on the 11th lap of the sprint car feature. Keller’s No. 99 race car made contact with the outside guardrail and flipped over several times before being struck by another race car at about 9:10 p.m.
Polesitter Tony Adams appeared to be the class of the field in the late model feature until eighth-place starter Jeff Rine advanced to second and began to apply intense pressure for the lead position. Rine passed second-place starter Jeff Smith for the runner up position on the ninth circuit. Meanwhile, fifth-place starter Steve Campbell raced a solid third, with fourth-place starter Mike Bingaman in fourth.
Adams and Rine put on an exciting driving exhibition through traffic in the race for the lead. On a lap 22 restart, however, Rine secured the lead with a pass by Adams exiting turn two. Despite attempts to reclaim the lead, Rine posted a mere .98 of a second margin of victory over Adams, Campbell, Smith, and Bingaman.
Second-place starter Shaun Miller powered into the lead at the start of the pro stock feature. Miller was trailed by third-place starter Scott Landis, and fifth-place starter Cody McFadden. On the seventh lap, McFadden was scored as the leader. The change was short-lived because Miller had the lead back the following lap.
On lap 14, Miller’s car went up in smoke while leading as McFadden’s racer got out of shape on the track. This turn of events enabled seventh-place starter Jason Smith to drive his way into the lead. The final restart saw Smith fend off any challenges and post a mere .57 of a second margin of victory over eighth-place starter Gerald Kratzer. McFadden, Dan Jensen, and Larry Hare completed the top five.
Polesitter Doug Minium Sr. took the lead at the start of the Roadrunner 20. Minium was chased by second-place starter Scott Dunham Jr. for the first lap before sixth-place starter Bob Bussey took over the runner up position.
Last year’s winner and 23rd place starter Keith Bissinger powered into the eighth position by lap six, only to have to withdraw from the race as a result of contact with two disabled race cars in turn two. When the race resumed, 10th-place starter Brad Mitch advanced to second, then took over the lead on the eighth circuit.
On the 13th lap, fourth-place starter Ricky Bender took command of the field with a pass by Mitch on the frontstretch. In the final laps, as an exciting six-car battle unfolded at the front of the pack, seventh-place starter Cory Long began to reel in Bender.
The final lap saw Long make a last-ditch effort to pull alongside of Bender in turns one and two for the lead and victory to no avail. At the finish, Bender was victorious by .70 of a second over Long, Minium, Mitch, and Bussey.

Polesitter Duane Mausteller powered into the lead at the start of the sprint car feature. Mausteller was chased by second-place starter Elvin Diller for the first lap before fourth-place starter Dave Calaman moved into the runner up position.
By lap three, sixth-place Blane Heimbach advanced to third and set his sites on Mausteller and Calaman at the front of the field. On the 11th circuit, Calaman passed Mausteller for the lead using the inside lane on the fronstretch.
Heimbach motored by Mausteller for second on the 14th circuit and began to reel in Calaman in traffic. It wasn’t until the 23rd lap when Heimbach made the winning pass by Calaman racing off turn four.
The final two laps saw Heimbach begin to stretch his lead and post a half-second victory over Calaman, fifth-place starter Nate Snyder, eighth-place starter Aaron Ott, and 14th-place starter Davie Franek.
Second-place starter Jeff Smith powered into the lead at the start of the late model feature. Smith was chased by Jeff Rine, who started on the pole when Coleby Frye withdrew from the race prior to the drop of the green flag.
On the fourth circuit, Rine made the winning pass using the inside lane exiting turn two. A lap later, fifth-place starter Tony Adams moved into the second position, while Smith maintained third. Meanwhile, seventh-place starter Dylan Yoder was catching the leaders.
On the 10th lap, Adams was forced to withdraw from the race with mechanical problems. On the ensuing restart, Rine pulled away as Smith and Yoder raced for second. On the 13th lap, Yoder tagged the third and fourth turn wall and stopped on the track.
Smith’s car then developed trouble on the 18th lap, moving fourth-place starter Steve Campbell into second. At the checkered flag, Rine was victorious by 8.2 seconds over Campbell, sixth-place starter Eric Hons, 12th-place starter Brian Bernheisel, and 10th-place starter Mike Bingaman.
Third-place starter Jason Smith led every lap of the pro stock feature for his first win of the season. Second-place starter Chad Davis followed Smith for the first two laps before fourth-place starter and last week’s winner AJ Hoffman moved into second.
On each restart, Smith held off any challenges set forth by Hoffman, who was looking to make it two wins in two races at the track. At the finish, however, Smith withstood the challenges and posted a half-second margin of victory over Hoffman, Brad Trump, Cody McFadden, and Davis.
Eric Pinkerton started third and wired the field for his first career win in the roadrunner main event. Pinkerton was trailed by second-place starter Marlin Dunham through lap nine, when sixth-place starter Ricky Bender advanced to second.
As Pinkerton drove to victory, an intense race unfolded behind him that resulted in contact between Bender and Dunham. Fifth-place starter Cory Long crossed the finish line in second, while Dunham’s car careened into the inside guardrail from the contact. Mike Kiehl and Bob Bussey were credited with top five positions. Bender was disqualified for the contact.

4/01/2009 -SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Selinsgrove Speedway will begin regular season competition at 6 p.m. this Saturday April 4, with the first four division show of 2009 featuring the 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners. Track gates will open at 4 p.m.
Following a win in record-setting pace in last Saturday's 25-lap season opening event for the 358 sprint cars, Scott Flammer, of West Milford, N.J., leads the A&A Auto Stores point standings entering this weekend's racing action over former two-time champion Blane Heimbach, of Selinsgrove. Flammer's third-career win at the track marked the second time that he won the season opening event for sprint cars.
The MAPCO Machine Shop late models will make their season debut this Saturday. Leading the list of entries will be four-time track champion Jeff Rine, of Danville, who recorded 17 top 10 finishes in 2008. Rine's five feature wins last year moved him into the third position on the speedway's all-time career leading late model win list behind Nescopeck drivers Bobby Croop and Richie Jensen, respectively.
AJ Hoffman, of Richfield, drove to a convincing win in last Saturday's Salem RV Center pro stock season opening event. Hoffman, who was last year's leading feature winner with seven victories, picked up where he left off in 2008 at the half-mile oval. Defending champion Troy Miller, of Tower City, was sidelined in the opener when the No. 29B he was driving developed mechanical problems.
The roadrunner division will also make its season start this Saturday and will be co-sponsored by Byers Built Engines and Collier Paving & Construction in 2009. Two-time champion Keith Bissinger, of Orangeville, who drove the popular roadrunner nicknamed "The Tank" to 10 wins last year, is expected to be in the field to begin his title defense.
Weekly Saturday night racing action will continue during the month of April. The track will host four division shows on April 11and 25. The Collier Paving & Construction Roadrunner 20 plus the remainder of a regular racing program will be held on April 18.
3/29/2009 - SELINSGROVE, Pa.
– Scott Flammer, of West Milford, N.J., not only won his second career
season opener for sprint cars at Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday night,
but he also shattered the 25-lap track record in the suspenseful
non-stop main event. Flammer eclipsed the old mark of 8:24.97 set by
fellow New Jersey driver Ryan Bohlke in 2005 in a new record time of 7:50.942.
The
$1,500 victory marked the third of Flammer’s career at the historic
half-mile oval behind the wheel of his trademark purple No. 37. Flammer
also won the 2007 season opener for sprint cars at the track. Picking
up where he left off in 2008, AJ Hoffman, of Richfield, scored a
convincing win in the 15-lap season opener for pro stocks.
Selinsgrove
Speedway will present the first four division show of the season at 6
p.m. Saturday, April 4, featuring the 358 sprint cars, late models, pro
stocks, and roadrunners. Track gates will open at 4 p.m.
Scott
Flammer started on the pole in the sprint car feature and stormed into
the lead at the drop of the green flag. On lap three, seventh-place
starter Davie Franek passed sixth-place starter Phil Walter for the
third position. Two laps later, Franek passed second-place starter
Elvin Diller for the runner up position and began to reel in Flammer.
As
the leaders began to encounter lapped traffic early in the race,
eighth-place starter Blane Heimbach was advancing his way into the top
five. At the midway point of the event, Flammer was holding a
straightaway lead over Franek and Heimbach.
Lapped traffic
played a role in the outcome of the race during the second half as
Franek was able to catch Flammer and make a pass for the lead on the
20th circuit exiting turn two. While Franek completed the 21st lap as
the leader of the race, Flammer remained in striking distance and
reclaimed the lead with a move in traffic on the backstretch on the
22nd lap. Heimbach then passed Franek for second but came up short at the finish.
The
last few laps saw a torrid battle unfold for the top five positions as
third-place starter Nate Snyder also became a serious threat. At the
checkered flag, Flammer was victorious by 1.3 seconds over Heimbach,
Snyder, Franek, and fourth-place starter Aaron Ott.
Second-place starter
Peanut Heintzelman powered into the early lead in the pro stock
feature. On the second circuit, fifth-place starter AJ Hoffman made the
winning pass on the outside of Heintzelman racing off turn four.
Fourth-place
starter Cody McFadden powered into the second spot on lap nine and set
his sites on Hoffman. Defending track champion Troy Miller brought out
the caution flag on lap ten when his racer stopped on the frontstretch.
When
the race resumed, McFadden began to pressure Hoffman for the lead. With
one lap to go, McFadden’s car began to smoke heavily, causing the
event’s final caution flag. The chase to the checkered flag saw Hoffman
go the distance and post a half-second margin of victory over
11th-place starter Jason Smith. Heintzelman, AJ Stroup, and Shaun
Miller completed the top five.

p.m. this Saturday, March 28. Track gates will open at 4 p.m.
The
358 sprint cars will compete in heat races and a 25-lap main event
paying $1,500 to win, which is the highest weekly winner’s share for
limited sprint car racing in Pennsylvania. The pro stocks will also
compete in heat races and a 15-lap feature. The MAPCO Machine Shop late
models will be on the program for practice sessions. Drivers will draw
for their starting positions in qualifying for the first two events of the season.
With
last year’s 358 sprint car champion Pat Cannon, of Etters, moving into
410 sprint cars, the track’s open wheel title will be wide open again
in 2009. Former champions Blane Heimbach, of Selinsgrove; Dave Calaman,
of Carlisle; and Jason Shultz, of Carlisle, are expected to be serious
challengers again this year among a host of talented 358 sprint car
drivers.
Calaman, who clinched the 2007 track championship and
returned in 2008 to win the season opening race, took a hiatus from
racing shortly after the season began last year. He is expected to be
back this season driving the Godfrey Motorsports No. 5G.
A
new pro stock champion may emerge this year as well. Last year’s
champion Troy Miller, of Tower City, announced he will be behind the
wheel of a late model more frequently in 2009.
Jeff Rine, of
Danville, and Keith Bissinger, of Orangeville, are expected to begin
defense of their track titles in the late model and Byers Built/Collier
Paving & Construction roadrunner divisions, respectively, when
Selinsgrove Speedway presents the first four division show of the
season at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 4.
Selinsgrove
Raceway Park, the one-fifth mile oval located inside of the half-mile
track, will also open its season at 12 p.m. this coming Sunday
afternoon with a program of go kart racing. Micro Sprints will be
allowed to practice following the kart program. Track gates will open
at 10 a.m. Weekly Friday night competition featuring go karts and the
Selinsgrove Ford micro sprint cars will begin April 3. Ken Duke
will be back this season to defend his 2008 Micro Sprint title, as will
Todd Hoover as he will be trying for his 3rd overall Raceway Park Micro
Sprint track title. Those are the early season favorites, but don't
look past another group of over a dozen fast regulars who will try and
take down the 2 Goliath's in the 2009 Micro Sprint point chase.
3/22/2009 - SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Veteran modified driver Danny Johnson, of Rochester, N.Y., was awarded the victory in Saturday’s Race of Champions (ROC) Insinger Performance Products Icebreaker 50 for big block modifieds when the car driven by Ryan Godown, of Ringoes, N.J., was disqualified for being 14 lbs. under regulation weight during a post-race inspection.
Johnson, who owns hundreds of victories in modified racing, collected $4,000 for the win in his first ever appearance at Selinsgrove Speedway. A large crowd was on hand to watch a stellar field of 56 big block modifieds compete in the $25,000 season opening event for the ROC.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the season opener for 358 sprint cars and pro stocks at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28. The late model division will also be on the program for practice sessions.
Polesitter Richie Pratt, Jr., an early season winner at Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland, powered into the lead at the start of the 50-lap main event. Pratt was chased by fourth-place starter Billy Decker. The caution flag unfurled after the completion of the first lap when Billy Pauch, Jr. crashed in turn three.
The ensuing restart saw Pratt continue to set a torrid pace in front of Decker and eighth-place starter Brett Hearn. On the fifth lap, Hearn advanced to second and set his sites on Pratt, only to withdraw from the race on lap seven when his racer broke in turn four.
Third-place starter Ryan Godown inherited the runner up position and chased Pratt around the historic half-mile oval. On the 16th lap, however, misfortune struck Pratt when his race car’s engine reportedly expired. Godown inherited the lead at this point and was class of the field for the duration of the extra-distance event.
On a lap 17 restart, Decker’s car bobbled in turns three and four while racing second, allowing ninth-place starter Danny Johnson to zoom underneath him for the runner up position. At the halfway point of the race, Godown held a two-second lead over Johnson, Decker, sixth-place starter Joey Grammes, and 10th-place starter Jeff Strunk.
Despite several caution flag periods in the second half of the race, Godown was able to distance himself from the rest of the field on each of the subsequent restarts. The final caution flag of the race unfurled on lap 45 for Friday night’s 358 modified winner and defending ROC champion Pat Ward, who had to restart the race at the rear of the field following a lap one pit stop and drove a convincing race into the top five.
The final five laps saw Godown cruise to a .80 of a second margin of victory over Johnson, only to have the win taken away when his No. 26 racer weighed in 14 lbs. under regulation during a post-race inspection. Johnson was awarded the win over Decker, Strunk, 19th-place starter Stewart Friesen, and 18th-place starter Jimmy Horton.
The heat races were won by Brett Hearn, Larry Wight, Joey Grammes, Ryan Godown, Rich Ricci, Jr., and Mike Iles. The consolations went to Stewart Friesen, Billy Pauch and Michael Storms.

3/21/2009 - SELINSGROVE, Pa – Two-time defending Race of Champions title holder Pat Ward, of Genoa, N.Y., wired the field for the victory in Friday night’s 25-lap 358 modified season opener at Selinsgrove Speedway. The win marked Ward’s first career at the Snyder County oval in what was the first ever race for 358 cubic inch powered modifieds (small blocks) at the track.
Ward, who scored two wins earlier this season in Florida, bested a strong field of 58 entries for the $2,200 win. He will attempt to sweep the two-race weekend at Selinsgrove when the big block modifieds compete at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, in the second annual Insinger Performance Products Icebreaker 50. Track gates will open at 2 p.m.
Ward drew the pole position for the start of the main event, with fellow Gypsum Racing teammates Larry Wight and Billy Decker starting second and fourth, respectively. Ward quickly vaulted into the lead at the drop of the green flag while Wight and Decker raced for second.
The event’s first caution flag unfurled on lap five when Decker’s machine rolled to a stop in turn four. The ensuing restart saw Ward pull away from the field and a spirited battle for second unfold between Wight, sixth-place starter Craig VonDohren, and 12th-place starter Duane Howard.
Wight brought out the second caution flag when he spun his racer exiting turn two on the tenth circuit. When the race resumed, Ward led VonDohren, Howard, and eighth-place starter Brett Hearn.
Matt Shepard, a recent winner at the Hagerstown Speedway, stormed into the top five from his 16th-place starting position in the final laps of the race. At the checkered flag, Ward was victorious by nearly three seconds over VonDohren, with Howard, Shepard, and Hearn rounding out the top five.
The top ten included Ryan Godown, Jimmy Horton, Ray Swinehart, Jimmy Chester, and Billy VanPelt. Both Horton and Swinehart qualified through the consolations and made strong runs from their 22nd and 19th starting spots, respectively.
