SELINSGROVE, Pa. - September 9, 2006 - Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove ended the 2006 358 sprint car season at Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night where he started it: In Victory Lane. Heimbach drove to his seventh win of the season in the 25-lap main event at the wheel of the Goff Racing/Creasy Signs No. 12.
Jeff Rine of Danville made a thrilling last-lap pass to win his fourth main event of the season in the 25-lap late model feature.
Peanut Heintzelman of Troxelville won his first race of the season in the 15-lap pro stock main event, while Chad Davis of Tower City won his first career race in the 12-lap roadrunner event.
Heimbach (358 sprints), Donnie Schick of Middleburg (late models), Gary Beward of Thompsontown (pro stocks) and Matt Drum of Port Trevorton (roadrunners) clinched the 2006 track championships.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the final race of the 2006 season at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, featuring the 24th Annual Salem RV Center National Open for 410 sprint cars plus pro stocks and fireworks. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.
The first caution flag of the sprint car feature unfurled on lap seven when second-place runner Chris Weiss collided with a slower car then collected Pat Cannon. While pacing under caution, fourth-place starter and race leader Brian Nornhold was penalized for jumping positions at the start of the race.
When the race restarted, second-place starter Nyle Berkes was the leader with fifth-place starter Scott Flammer in pursuit. On the 10th circuit, Flammer made an inside pass by Berkes on the frontstretch for the lead.
On lap 14, Flammer's racer developed mechanical problems, allowing 12th-place starter Blane Heimbach to drive by for the lead. The red flag stopped the race on lap 18, when Larry Kelleher flipped his sprinter in turn four; he escaped injury.
The final restart saw Heimbach lead the field to the finish over Jamie Schwarz, Mike Walter, Len Krautheim and Bob Beidleman.
Second-place starter Dave Shulski powered into the lead at the start of the late model feature. Shulski was chased by third-place starter Mike Bingaman. On the seventh lap, sixth-place starter Tony Adams advanced to second and set his sites on Shulski. Adams made the pass for the lead on the ninth circuit, while Shulski and Bingaman raced in the top three. The final ten laps saw 11th-place starter Jeff Rine horsepower his way into the top five. With five laps to race, Rine drove into second and began to reel in Adams in lapped traffic.
The final lap produced a thrilling finish when Rine passed Adams for the lead in traffic on the backstretch. Eighth-place starter Jim Yoder also put in a bid for the lead and win. At the finish, Rine was victorious over Adams, Yoder, Shulski and Chris Shuey.
Polesitter and race leader John Bouse collided with the third turn wall on the second circuit. The restart put third-place starter Brad Trump on the point. Trump led the field while eighth-place starter Peanut Heintzelman raced second.
On the ninth lap, Trump's racer developed problems and withdrew from the race. Heintzelman inherited the lead at this point and held off 11th-place starter Gary Beward for the victory. Gerald Kratzer, AJ Hoffman and Larry Hare completed the top five.
Eighth-place starter Mark Spencer passed second-place starter Wendy Swartz for the lead on the third circuit. Spencer led the field until the eighth lap, when seventh-place starter Chad Davis stormed into the lead.
Davis persevered several restarts and held off fifth-place starter Doug Minium for the victory. Spencer, Cory Long and track champion Matt Drum completed the top five.
