SELINSGROVE, Pa. May 6, 2006 - Hurricane warnings came out with a few laps remaining as Mike Walter pressured Duane Mausteller for the lead with Pat Cannon close behind, in the 25 lap Sprint car feature. But when all was said and done, the skies cleared, Mausteller, and his family owned Bardo's collision No.21 sprint car, found himself in victory lane after fighting off a hard charging Walter & Cannon. A yellow flag in the closing laps enabled Hurricane to close in on the leaders while running third. He passed Cannon for the second spot and set his sights on Mausteller. He closed in on every lap but came up just "one lap short", as many racers have stated over their careers. Mausteller took the victory by .105 seconds, while third place finisher Pat Cannon was one half of a second behind Walter.
Race Fans were admitted free, as part of the speedway's 6th annual, "Pack The Track" promotion co-sponsored by Cindy Rowe Auto Glass and Paul Stine Chevrolet.
Chris Shuey of Orefield also recorded his first win of the season in the 25-lap late model main event, while two-time-defending champion Troy Miller of Tower City won his first race this year in the 15-lap pro stock feature.
Defending roadrunner champion Brad Mitch of McClure recorded his second win of the season in the 12-lap event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the Ink Spot Printing Pro Stock 20 at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, along with sprint cars, late models and roadrunners. The Pro Stock 20 championship race will pay $1,000 to win.
Jamie Schwartz started on the pole position in the sprint car feature when original polesitter Charlie Anderson opted to start the event on the rear of the field. Schwartz powered into the early race lead, with second-place starter Duane Maustellar in pursuit.
Rookie fifth-place starter Jordan Frontz raced third for most of the event, while point leader and 11th-place starter Blane Heimbach stormed into fourth by the seventh circuit.
On the 15th lap, leader Schwartz's car developed mechanical problems and coasted to a stop in turn one. Maustellar inherited the lead, with Frontz and 21st-place starter Pat Cannon in third. Heimbach's car rolled to a stop on the frontstretch on lap 18, when the race was stopped for
re-fueling.
The final laps saw an intense three-car battle unfold for the lead and win between Maustellar, Cannon and 10th-place starter Mike Walter. The final lap saw Walter drive by Cannon for second and set his sites on the leader. At the finish line, Maustellar was victorious by less than half a second over Walter. Cannon, Frontz and Jason Shultz completed the top five.
Third-place starter Eric Hons led the first five laps of the late model feature before seventh-place starter Chris Shuey made the winning pass using the outside lane in turn four.
Shuey was then chased by eighth-place starter Tony Adams. The race was red flagged on lap eight when 17th-place starter Glen Heddings made a hard impact with the inside backstretch guardrail; Heddings escaped injury. The race was delayed for about 30 minutes while track crews made
repairs to the guardrails.
When the race resumed, Shuey held off Adams, Hons, Dustin Hoffman and Jeff Rine. On lap 18, sixth-place starter Kenny Trevitz began to show speed when he moved into the runner up position. The final laps saw Trevitz reel in Shuey. At the finish, Shuey was victorious by 2.52
seconds over Trevitz, Adams, Rine and Hoffman.
Polesitter Larry Hare led the first lap of the pro stock feature. Hare was passed by ninth-place starter Troy Miller for the lead on the second circuit. Miller quickly stretched his lead and drove to a convincing win over Meade Hahn; Dan Jensen; Dave Brouse, Jr.; and current point leader
Gary Beward.
Fifth-place starter Brad Mitch wired the field for his victory in the roadrunner feature. Seventh-place starter Ray Rothfuss finished just .24 of second behind Mitch at the finish. Point leader Gary Kerstetter, Matt Drum and Matt Keister completed the top five.
The stands were full once again for Pack the Track at Selinsgrove Speedway. Another super night of racing at the fastest half mile on the east coast with its annual free admission promotion. While the exact attendance will never be known, track officials rank it near the top of the all time crowds at Selinsgrove Speedway. Charlie Paige is to be commended for a job well done in his effort to make Selinsgrove Speedway the finest racing facility in Pennslyvania and beyond. Saturday was also Charlie's Birthday, and we all at Selinsgrove Speedway wish Charlie a Happy Birthday, as well as a big Thank You for a free night of racing.
