SELINSGROVE, Pa. -
May 27, 2006 Defending sprint car champion Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove defended his home turf by winning the 30-lap 26th Annual Jack Gunn Memorial Challenge Race against the URC sprint cars Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway. Heimbach was at the wheel of the Goff Racing/Paul Stine Chevrolet No. 12 for his third victory of the season that was worth $3,000. URC driver Greg Coverdale of Milford, Del., was the C-N-B Mushroom fast qualifier with a lap time of 18.213.
Gary Beward of Thompsontown won his sixth race of the season in the 15-lap pro stock feature, while the May 13 make up feature for roadrunners was won by Keith Bissinger of Orangeville. Selinsgrove Speedway will present a four division show of sprints, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 3.
The first lap of the sprint car feature saw 20th-place starter Colby Womer make contact with the first turn guardrail. On the restart, polesitter Brooke Weibley powered into the early race lead. Weibley was followed by second-place starter and former Selinsgrove Speedway champion Kramer Williamson.
The race was stopped on lap three when four Selinsgrove Speedway regulars collided in turn two. Len Krautheim, Mike Walter, Adrian Shaffer and Jason Shultz all escaped injury in the multi-car incident. Weibley continued to set the pace on the restart, with Williamson and sixth-place starter Blane Heimbach in pursuit. On lap five, Heimbach stormed by Williamson for second and set his sites on Weibley. On the 15th lap, Heimbach made the winnng pass by Weibley using the inside lane in turn four. The next several laps saw defending URC champion and third-place starter Curt Michael show some speed. Michael
reeled in Heimbach and the two champions went wheel-to-wheel in a race for the lead. Misfortune struck Michael on the 27th lap when mechanical problems forced him to withdraw from the race. The restart resulted in a spectacular second turn crash involving Midge Miller and Scott Flammer; both drivers were not injured.
For the final two laps, Heimbach had to hold off seventh-place starter Nate Snyder and fifth-place starter Jason Clauss. At the checkered flag, Heimbach was victorious by 1.23 seconds over Snyder. Clauss, Williamson and 10th-place starter Phil Walter completed the top five.
Polesitter Jason Smith led the first lap of the pro stock feature. The second circuit saw fifth-place starter Dustin Hoffman power into the lead with teammate and 12th-place starter Gary Beward charging into second. On the 11th lap, while battling for the lead, Hoffman's race car catapulted out over the first turn guardrail, then flipped back onto the track in a spectacular series of tumbles. Hoffman escaped injury. When the race resumed, Beward inherited the lead and posted the win by a half car-length over AJ Stroup. Neil Langtry, Jim Somers and Dave Brouse, Jr. completed the top five.
In the makeup roadrunner feature seventh-place starter Keith Bissinger led wire-to-wire for his win. Bissinger was chased by current point leader and ninth-place starter Gary Kerstetter for most of the event. At the finish, Bissinger was victorious over Kerstetter, Cory Long, Doug Minium and Matt Drum.
