Adam Romig and a proud Father |
|
Selinsgrove, Pa. May 20, 2006 - "This is a dream come true," said an emotional Romig in Victory Lane. "I've been coming to this place since I was two years old." He dominated the race from start to finish in the 25 lap Main Event on Saturday night while holding off some of the best sprint car drivers around. Young Adam Romig of Selinsgrove started his racing career at the historic Selinsgrove Speedway in go karts and micro sprint cars on the one-fifth mile oval located inside of the big half-mile track.
Adam led the feature wire to wire, but not without a bit of excitement and a nerve racking moment. While extending his lead to nearly a straight away on lap 20, Adam entered turn three a little higher than normal looking for some bite for his Hoosier tires. What he found was the right side of his sprint car, kissing the five tier megawall. While bracing for an impact, Adam's luck was on his side. The car just skimmed the rails instead of an impact he was expecting. He tried to get it off the wall, but the car had other plans. His sprint car "rode the rails" as some would say, the entire 3rd and 4th turns. His first reaction was to get back on the throttle to make sure everything was ok heading down the front stretch. And throttle it he did! By then he realized that all was well with the car, but 2nd and 3rd place runner's Scott Flammer and Phil Walter had closed the gap considerably. The young Adam Romig managed to regain his composure as he made his way thru lapped traffic the final five laps and brought his car to victory lane where he was met with tears of joy from his entire family, friends, and fans. Phil Walter came home 2nd, while Nate Snyder, Scott Flammer, and Blane Heimbach completed the top 5.
Jeff Rine of Danville became the first repeat late model feature winner of the season in the makeup 25-lap feature, while Tony Adams of Sunbury won the regularly scheduled 25-lap feature to become the track's sixth different winner this season. Gary Beward continues his dominance in the pro stock division with his fifth win of the season in the 15-lap feature, while Keith Bissinger of Orangeville won the 12-lap roadrunner main event.
Polesitter Terry Neitz held the late model field at bay through the midway point of the race. Neitz was chased by second-place starter Randall Paxton for eight laps before sixth-place starter Jim Yoder advanced to second. On lap 13, Yoder drove by Neitz for the lead in turn two. On the 18th circuit, 10th-place starter Tony Adams passed Yoder for the lead using the outside lane in turn four. Yoder maintained the runner up position while 18th-place starter Donnie Schick made a late-race charge by Rine into third. At the finish, Adams was victorious over Yoder, Schick, Rine and Paxton.
In the make up late model feature, second-place starter Eric Hons led polesitter Randall Paxton for the first seven laps. Meanwhile, 11th-place starter Jeff Rine horsepowered his way around the top of the race track and into the third position by lap six. On the eighth circuit, Rine put his No. 2J into the lead, then checked out from the field. At the finish, Rine was victorious by 4.46 seconds over Yoder, Chris Wilkenson, Bud Witmer and Hons.
Fifth-place Bill Conrad led the first two laps of the pro stock feature. The race was stopped on lap two when Dave Brouse, Jr. spun in turn three and was struck head-on by Lonnie Hile. Hile was transported to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and released early Sunday morning following treatment for undisclosed injuries.
When the race resumed, defending champion Troy Miller powered into the lead on lap three. Miller stayed in command of the field until the 13th circuit, when 12th-place starter Gary Beward made the winning pass using the outside lane in turn two. Beward went on to post the win over Miller, Brad Trump, AJ Hoffman and AJ Stroup.
Fourth-place starter Doug Minium led the first two laps of the roadrunner feature. Sixth-place starter Keith Bissinger stormed into the lead on lap three. Bissinger went on to post the win over Matt Drum, Zack Lingle, Eric Pinkerton and Chad Davis.
Pro stock driver Lonny Hile of Mt. Pleasant Mills was treated and released early Sunday morning from the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for undisclosed injuries sustained in a lap two crash during the pro stock feature.
The three sprint car drivers who were injured in the May 13 sprint car feature are recuperating at home. Wes Irwin of Lebanon was released from the Geisinger Medical Center Friday evening. Larry Kelleher of Scranton was released last Sunday evening, while Joey Borich of Sunbury was discharged last Monday.
