Doug Esh Claims Speedweek Finale At Selinsgrove |
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - July 4, 2006 - Doug Esh of Lancaster drove to a convincing victory in Tuesday night's Cindy Rowe Auto Glass PA Speedweek 410 sprint car finale at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The $5,000 win in the 30-lap main event was the first of Esh's career at the track, sixth overall in 2006, and second straight in the 16th Annual PA Speedweek Series. Fred Rahmer of Salfordville clinched his 10th career PA Speedweek title with his fourth-place finish in the main event.
Mark Smith of Tower City was the Dupont Tyvek fast qualifier with a lap time of 16.704. Neil Petock of Nescopeck was the Trone Outdoor Advertising hard charger. Both drivers received $100 bonuses.
Todd Shaffer of Millerstown set a new 10-lap track record of 2:51.52 at the wheel of the Hamilton Motorsports No. 77. Gary Beward of Thompsontown won his seventh pro stock race of the season in the division's 15-lap main event.
Doug Esh started on the outside of the front row and wired the field for the victory. Polesitter Chad Layton chased Esh for the entire event to no avail. On several occasions, Layton attempted to close in on the leader in lapped traffic. The event's only caution flag unfurled on lap 16 when Mike Erdley's No. 11 rolled to a stop on the backstretch. When the race resumed, Esh
streaked away from the field while Layton maintained the runner up position.
Third-place starter Fred Rahmer raced third until lap 26, when seventh-place starter Todd Shaffer powered into the third position. At the checkered flag, Esh was victorious by 2.89 over Layton, Shaffer, Rahmer and fourth-place starter Mark Smith.
A multi-car accident involving two-time defending champion Troy Miller stop the race on the first lap of the pro stock feature. All drivers escaped injury. On the restart, second-place starter Gary Beward powered into the lead and was chased by polesitter Peanut Heintzelman for the duration of the event. Dave Bowsman, who started 10th, made it a close three-car battle for the lead and the win.
At the checkered flag, Beward was victorious by 2.06 over Heintzelman, Bowsman, AJ Stroup and Jason Smith.
