Phil Walter Wins First Summer Nationals Title; Coleby Frye Wins LM First |
SELINSGROVE, Pa. August 26 - Phil Walter of McClure wired the field for a convincing victory in Saturday night's 30-lap Paul Stine Chevrolet 358 Sprint Car Summer Nationals event at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The win was worth $4,000 and was the second of the season for Walter at the track. Walter, substituting for the injured Adam Romig of Selinsgrove, was driving the SVMC Sheet Metal sponsored No. 1 owned by Adam Romig & family.
The event was originally scheduled for last Saturday but was postponed due to rain after most of the qualifying was completed.
Last Saturday, Joey Borich of Sunbury was the 358 sprint car fast qualifier with a lap time of 18.427 (103.466 MPH). Borich picked up a $150 bonus from Hackenberg's Tree Service, Brian Wood Photography and Brian Harro from Selinsgrovespeedway.com.
Coleby Frye of Dover led every lap of the 25-lap late model main event for his first career victory at Selinsgrove Speedway. AJ Hoffman of Richfield scored his seventh win of the season in the 15-lap pro stock feature, while Donnie Murphy of Minersville also won his seventh 12-lap roadrunner race of the season.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present two complete racing programs this Labor Day holiday weekend. The 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners will compete at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 2. The speedway will present the Third Annual Selinsgrove Ford Paul Long Memorial for Late Models at 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 3.
Phil Walter nabbed the lead at the start of the sprint car main event and never looked back. He was chased by polesitter Len Krautheim until the halfway point, when sixth-place starter Pat Cannon stormed into second.
Cannon began to reel in Walter for the lead but struck the first turn guardrail on the15th lap and was sidelined for the remainder of the event. When the race resumed, Walter held the field at bay with Krautheim, third-place starter Mike Walter and fourth-place starter Joey Borich racing in the top five.

With five laps remaining, M. Walter powered into second and began to chase down his brother P. Walter at the front of the pack. Navigating through traffic, P. Walter took the checkered flag by 1.5 seconds over M. Walter, Borich, ninth-place starter Blane Heimbach and Krautheim.
A multi-car crash occurred in turn three involving Jamie Schwarz, Nyle Berkes, Adrian Shaffer and Bob Beidleman after the race concluded. All drivers escaped injury. Polesitter Coleby Frye led every lap of the late model feature for his first career win at the track. Frye was chased by fifth-place starter Brett Schadel for the entire event.
A battle unfolded for the third position throughout the race, with seventh-place starter Bud Witmer, eighth-place starter Chris Shuey and, at the finish, 11th-place starter Donnie Schick racing third. Witmer and Shuey rounded out the top five at the finish.
Polesitter Bill Glass held off third-place starter Brad Trump and seventh-place starter AJ Hoffman for the first seven laps in the pro stock feature. On the eighth circuit, Hoffman powered into the lead and drove to his seventh win of the season over eighth-place starter Gary Beward. Glass, Trump and Peanut Heintzelman completed the top five.
Donnie Murphy started 12th and took the lead from 10th-place starter Cory Long on the fifth lap of the roadrunner feature. At the finish, Murphy was victorious over Long, Dave Kamp, Keith Bissinger and Elvin Brennan. Ray Rothfuss, who crossed the finish line in the second position, was disqualified following a post-race technical inspection.
