SELINSGROVE, Pa. August 12,2006 - Mike Walter of Penns Creek bested Nate Snyder of Halifax for his third win of the season in the 25-lap 358 sprint car feature Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway. Walter was at the wheel of the Ford-powered/Selinsgrove Ford-sponsored No. 63 sprint car.
Dustin Hoffman of Evandale won his first career late model race in the division's 25-lap main event. Bill Glass of Middleburg won his first pro stock race of the season in the 15-lap main event, while Cory Long of Selinsgrove also picked up his first win of the year in the 12-lap roadrunner main event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the Sixth Annual Paul Stine Chevrolet Summer Nationals for 358 Sprint Cars at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 19. The 30-lap event will pay $4,000 to win and $300 to start. Time trials, heats, B- and A-Mains will be the format for the most lucrative 358 sprint car race of the season. The 358 sprint cars will be joined by the late models and pro stocks. Gates will open at 5 p.m.
A multi-car accident occurred on the start of the sprint car feature involving points leaders Blane Heimbach and Pat Cannon. Heimbach was able to rejoin, while Cannon was sidelined for the remainder of the event.
Polesitter Jamie Schwartz drove into the lead when the race restarted. Shwartz was chased by second-place starter Alan Spriggle and fourth-place starter Joey Borich. Borich moved into second on lap two, while 10th-place starter Mike Walter advanced to third.
On the seventh circuit, Walter made an exciting pass by both Borich and Schwartz using the inside lane in turn one for the lead. Two circuits later, 12th-place starter Nate Snyder powered into the runner up position and began to reel in Walter.
By the midway point of the race, Heimbach rebounded into the top five and attempted to catch the leaders. With five laps remaining, the leaders began to encounter slower traffic and Snyder capitalized with a move for the lead in turn two. The next circuit, however, Walter reclaimed the lead with an inside pass on the backstretch in traffic.
Walter and Snyder dueled for the lead and victory while Heimbach maintained the third position. Walter was victorious by only .38 of a second over Snyder. Heimbach, Adrian Shaffer and Bob Beidleman completed the top five.
Polesitter Bobby Croop powered into the lead at the start of the late model feature and was trailed by second-place starter Brett Schadel. Sixth-place starter Tony Adams advanced to third on the fourth lap but was sidelined following a lap nine skirmish on the backstretch.
At the midway point, seventh-place starter Dustin Hoffman drove into second and set his sites on Croop. On lap 15, Hoffman drove by Croop for the lead and proceeded to pull away from the field. The event's final caution flag unfurled on lap 18 when Brett Schadel crashed in turn three while racing eighth.
Hoffman set the pace on the restart, with Croop and Jeff Rine, who rebounded from a lap 12 accident, in close pursuit. At the finish, Hoffman posted a four-second margin of victory over Croop, Rine, points leader Donnie Schick and leading feature winner Chris Shuey.
Polesitter Bill Glass wired the field for his win in the pro stock feature. Glass was challenged by third-place starter Brad Trump until the 10th circuit when Trump crashed into the third turn wall.
On the restart, Glass led fourth-place starter Larry Hare and 10th-place starter AJ Stroup. With two laps remaining, Stroup passed Hare for second and reeled in Glass. At the checkered flag, Glass was victorious by just .22 of a second over Stroup, Neil Langtry, Hare and Dan Jensen.
Fourth-place starter Tim Mitch led the first nine laps of the roadrunner main event. Sixth-place starter Mark Spencer powered into the lead, only to be passed by eighth-place starter Cory Long before the completion of lap 10. Long went on to win the race over 11th-place starter Gary Kerstetter, Mitch, Spencer and Chad Davis.
