Hurricane Walter Wins Career First At Selinsgrove In Sprint Car Competition |
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - April 15, 2006 Mike "Hurricane" Walter of Penns Creek made a last-lap pass by Kyle Bachman of Selinsgrove to win his first ever sprint car feature Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.
Walter started 14th in the 24-car field and reeled in race leader Bachman in the final laps to score the win at the wheel of the Selinsgrove Ford No. 63.
Jimmy Adams of Herndon won his fourth career late model feature in the division's 25-lap feature, while AJ Hoffman of Richfield won his first race of the season in the 15-lap pro stock main. Gary Kerstetter of McClure won his second 12-lap roadrunner feature this year.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the Late Model Spring Championship at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The 30-lap main event for late models will pay $2,000 to win and $200 to start. The sprint cars, pro stocks and roadrunners will be a part of the four division show.
Second-place starter and former big block modified driver Scott Flammer led the sprint car feature at the drop of the green flag. Flammer was chased by polesitter Scott Tate for 10 laps before Tate lost control of his racer in turn four.
When the race resumed, Flammer was trailed by third-place starter Kyle Bachman and sixth-place starter Bryan Golden. Seventh-place starter Nate Snyder stormed to the front of the pack while racing the high line around the oval. On the 14th circuit, Snyder challenged Flammer for the lead on the backstretch when their two race cars made contact but were able to continue.
Snyder streaked away from the field while 12th-place starter and current point leader Blane Heimbach drove into the top five. On the 17th circuit, Heimbach's No. 12 blew a right rear tire while racing fourth.
While under caution, Snyder's No. 5 also developed a flat tire and Flammer spun while pacing in second. This turn of events put Bachman into the lead for the restart. With only five laps remaining, 14th-place starter Mike Walter reeled in Bachman and made the winning pass using the inside lane in turn three on the final circuit.
Walter took the checkered flag by only .47 of a second over Bachman, Jason Shultz, Golden and Brian Nornhold. Snyder came back to finish ninth, while Heimbach settled for 13th.
Polesitter Jimmy Adams led flag to flag for his win in the late model feature. For most of the event, second-place starter Dustin Hoffman raced in his shadow.
The second half of the event saw both sixth-place starter Jeff Rine and seventh-place starter Donnie Schick put in bids for the runner up position. Hoffman held off any challenges, however, and continued to pressure Adams for the lead.
At the checkered flag, Adams was victorious by a mere .60 of a second over Hoffman, Schick, Rine and fifth-place starter Tony Adams.
Outside front row starter AJ Hoffman led wire to wire for his victory in the pro stock feature but not without having to fend off several competitors, including sixth-place starter Dave Brouse Jr. and 12th-place starter Gerald Kratzer.
During the last five laps of the event, Kratzer tormented Hoffman for the lead and the win. At the finish line, however, Hoffman was victorious by just .50 of a second over Kratzer, Dan Jensen, AJ Stroup and point leader Gary Beward.
Second-place starter Tim Mitch led the first two laps of the roadrunner feature before polesitter Ray Rothfuss led a single circuit on lap three. Lap four saw eighth-place starter Gary Kerstetter power into the lead and hold off teammate and fourth-place starter Matt Keister for the half car-length victory. Matt Drum, Rothfuss and Dave Kamp completed the top five.
