Hodnett Wins First 410 Event Of 2007
SELINSGROVE, Pa.May 27th- Greg Hodnett of York won a thrilling battle over Brian Leppo of New Oxford in the 30-lap Keystone Cup Series 410 sprint car main event Sunday night at Selinsgrove Speedway. Hodnett's $5,000 victory signified his 10th career win at Selinsgrove Speedway and allowed him to overtake the Dupont/Tyvek Keystone Cup Series points lead by four points over Fred Rahmer of Salfordville going into Monday's finale at the Port Royal Speedway. Lance Dewease of Fayetteville was the fast qualifier with a lap time of 17.063. Gary Beward of Thompsontown wired the field for his third win of the season in the 15-lap pro stock main event.
In the sprint car feature, second-place starter Leppo took the lead on the second lap from polesitter Lucas Wolfe while racing down the backstretch. By lap nine, Leppo was steadily approaching lapped traffic as he pulled away from second and third place racers Wolfe and Jeff Shepard. On lap 10, Shepard, who started fourth, completed the pass around Wolfe for second. Eighth-place starter Mark Smith powered into third a lap later. At the halfway point of the race, the caution flag slowed the field as ninth-place starter Doug Esh lost his wing's side panel while running in the fourth position.
On the restart Leppo pulled away while Shepard and Smith battled behind for the second spot. Smith completed his pass for second on lap 18 off turn four. A caution on lap 19 slowed the field yet again as track regular Blane Heimbach slowed on the backstretch. Leppo once again pulled away on the restart as Shepard challenged back for the second spot from Smith. Shepard completed the pass as Smith slowed to a stop in turn three. On lap 25, third-place starter Hodnett passed Shepard in turns one and two, only to have Shepard sneak back by. On the same lap, a caution for a slowing car brought the field back together. The field was then red-flagged so the teams could refuel the sprint cars for the final five laps.
When the race resumed, Hodnett powered into second and took the lead off turn two on lap 27. While running second, Shepard stopped along the backstretch on lap 29. The one-lap chase to the checkered flag saw Hodnett pull away on the restart and win the race over Leppo, 11th-place starter Fred Rahmer, seventh-place starter Todd Shaffer and 13th-place starter T.J. Stutts rounding out the top five.
Second-place starter Beward powered into the lead at the start of the pro stock feature. Meanwhile, polesitter AJ Hoffman and third-place starter Troy Miller dueled for the runner up position for most of the event. At the checkered flag, Beward was victorious over Miller, eighth-place starter Larry Hare, Hoffman and fifth-place starter Peanut Heintzelman.
